On 22 September, the opening of the "Saint Sergius of Radonezh" exhibition timed to the 600th Anniversary of the saint's relics being uncovered was held in the State anteroom of the Armoury Chamber. The display reveals various aspects of St Sergius' veneration.
The show covers a considerable time interval – from the first third of the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century and features pieces created in the Kremlin workshops and donated by Russian sovereigns to the Holy Trinity–St Sergius Monastery.
Director General of the Moscow Kremlin Museums Elena Gagarina, Chairman of the Council of Experts on Church Art, Architecture and Conservation of the Russian Orthodox Church, member of the Patriarchal Council on Culture Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, and curator of the exhibition Svetlana Zyuzeva took part in the opening ceremony.
"St Sergius’ life is an example of high moral courage. The saint and the monastery that he established had a great influence on history, culture and spiritual life of our country," said Elena Gagarina at the exhibition opening, "St Sergius of Radonezh was revered by the both ruling dynasties of Russia, he was the first among the Moscow saint glorified by the Church and one of the first Moscow saints."
"Today is a significant day, when the leading museum of the country pays tribute to the saint who largely determined the vector of our country's development and has left an enormous legacy, a tremendous mark on Russian artistic tradition. Surely, here in the Moscow Kremlin Museums, all the best things of the highest artistic value have been collected," noted archpriest Leonid Kalinin. HСѓ also added, "These are difficult times, so it is very important to commemorate the Venerable Sergius – this is one of the names in the Russian history, which unites all of us."
The curator of the exhibition, research worker of the Moscow Kremlin Museums Svetlana Zyuzeva marked that the show gives a unique opportunity to see remarkable pieces of icon painting and wonderful icons from the Assumption Cathedral.
The "Saint Sergius of Radonezh" exhibition is on till the 8th of January 2023.
